AI map of academic libraries in the DACH region

As a participant in the cross-network project “Strengthening AI Competencies Across Networks” which encompasses the library networks of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the Bochum University Library has taken on the coordination and editorial oversight of an AI map for academic libraries.

The Digital Humanities Center at the Bochum University Library evaluated numerous mapping tools and, following a decision by the network libraries, implemented the map using the open-source software uMap.

The AI Map is not an AI-generated tool or one that uses generative AI; rather, it serves to catalog AI experts, AI services, and AI projects in academic libraries. These libraries are encouraged to add their own location entries to the map and include information about their local AI offerings. The map is currently under development and has only a few entries so far.

The entries in the directory are intended to facilitate networking among individual libraries regarding AI, increase the visibility of libraries’ AI activities, and promote the development of joint AI offerings.
Other working groups within this project address these objectives. For example, across library networks and state borders, library-specific materials are being developed to train library users and staff on AI; AI use cases and research tools relevant to libraries are being collected and evaluated; and dialogue on ethical, legal, and technical aspects is being promoted.
