Library of the Commission for Contemporary History

The library of the Commission for Contemporary History, which was previously located in Bonn, has been housed in the University Library since June 2026 and is open to the public.

You cannot use the library without prior registration or outside of opening hours.

Opening hours

  • Monday to Thursday: 8.30 am to 4 pm
  • Friday: 8.30 am to 12 pm (noon)

Library holdings and use

The library of the Commission for Contemporary History holds a collection of approximately 30,000 publications. The collection focuses primarily on the history of political Catholicism and the Catholic Church in Germany since the early 19th century. Topics from the more recent past are also represented. This specialized library is a reference-only library. 5,000 volumes are housed at the Bochum University Library and are directly accessible by appointment. An additional 25,000 volumes are stored at the Bochum-Langendreer storage facility and can be viewed upon request.
