Dante: The Divine Comedy – Graphics by Peter Beckmann

Exhibition on the occasion of the 101st Annual Conference of the German Dante Society at the RUB

Together with the Chair of Italian Literature at Ruhr University Bochum, the University Library Bochum presents the exhibition “Dante: The Divine Comedy – Graphics by Peter Beckmann”.

The exhibition will be on view from October 23 through November 30, 2025, on the third floor of the University Library during regular opening hours. Admission is free.

Between Hell and Paradise – Peter Beckmann Interprets Dante

Peter Beckmann is a Bochum-based artist and graphic designer who has been working in his hometown since the 1970s. A central theme of his work is the Dance of Death, which he has reinterpreted in various series, such as "The Berlin Dance of Death" and "The Dance of Death of Ukraine". Using techniques including collage, stencil graffiti, and digital image processing, Beckmann combines clear forms with a striking use of color and black-and-white contrasts.

In his most recent series of graphics, Beckmann turns to Dante’s "Divine Comedy" – a classic of Italian literature that tells the story of a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. Over the course of more than two years, Beckmann developed his own interpretation of the text. In his images, he transforms the medieval ideas of guilt, purification, and salvation into a powerful and contemporary visual language.
